Resolved Question: Moving to Michigan...Jackson area?

We need to be about 30-45 min from East Lansing and around an hour from Detroit airport (college student and frequent flyer in household). We were looking at Jackson area and surrounding towns. Can anyone from that area tell us some good locations to look for a house, decent schools for middle and high school students, low crime (compared to other MI towns)? My husband is not interested in living in a college town, he prefers the more rural locations, but with me going to MSU and him needing the airport he's a little stuck with being near the big cities for now.
